West Highlands Tour

Nach zwei Wochen in Edinburgh wurde es für mich endlich Zeit für den ersten richtigen Ausflug: eine Bustour in die West Highlands!

After two weeks in Edinburgh it was due time for my first proper trip here: a bous tour to the West Highlands!

Ich habe mich dazu entschieden, eine eintägige geführte Bustour mit Timerbush Tours zu machen*. Ich hatte bereits bei meinem letzten Aufenthalt in Edinburgh zwei Touren mit Timberbush gemacht, davon eine zweitägige, und war beide Male sehr zufrieden. Die Stops sind immer wunderschön und die Busfahrer sehr nett – richtige schottische Urgesteine! Meiner Erfahrung nach haben die Fahrer auch immer Vieles und Interessantes zur Gegend und zu den einzelnen Ausflugszielen zu erzählen und sorgen für eine rundum entspannte und lustige Atmosphäre im Bus. Für dieses Mal habe ich mich für die Tour West Highlands Lochs, Mountains & Castles entschieden.

I’ve decided to book myself onto one of Timerbush Tour’s guided one-day trips*. I’ve already done two tours with them the last time I stayed in Edinburgh, one of which was a two-day tour, and I really enjoyed it. The stops are always beautifully selected and the guides very friendly – quite the Scottish characters! In my experience they always have a lot of interesting stuff to tell about the area, landscape, and about the actual stops as well. They always create a really pleasant mood in the bus. This time, I’ve settled on the West Highlands Lochs, Mountains & Castles tour.

1. Stop: Doune Castle

Unser erster Stopp war Doune Castle. Manche mögen die Burg direkt erkennen, denn sie ist eine richtige Prominenz! Am bekanntesten ist sie vielen vielleicht als Drehort für Monty Pythons Film Die Ritter der Kokosnuss, in welchem sie als Kulisse für Camelot, Schloss Dosenschreck und dem Sumpfschloss diente. Aber auch in Sir Walter Scotts Roman Waverley taucht Doune Castle auf und dient dort dem Protagonisten Edward Waverley als Zufluchtsort. Gebaut wurde sie aber bereits 1390 vom 1. Duke of Albany, Robert Stewart, blieb aber entweder unvollendet – oder wurde teilweise abgerissen!

Our first stop was Doune Castle. Many might recognise this fortification instantly as it’s a bit of a celebrity! It is propably best known as filming location for Monty Python’s The Holy Grail, in which it’s been used for Camelot, Castle Anthrax, and Swamp Castle. Doune Castle also appears in Sir Walter Scott’s novel Waverley where it provides shelter for the protagonist, Edward Waverley. The castle was, however, already built in 1390 by the 1st Duke of Albany, Robert Stewart. But it was either never completed – or partly taken down!

Die Burg diente auch lange als königlicher Erholungsort und die Feuerstelle zeugt auch heute noch von den großen Banketten, die hier wohl gehalten wurden. So einen großen Ofen hätte ich auch gerne!

For a long time, the castle served as a royal retreat. One can guess the size of the banquets that must have been celebrated here by the sheer size of the fire place. I wouldn’t mind cooking the odd dinner or two in such an oven either!

2. Stop: Kilchurn Castle

Für unseren zweiten Stopp hielten wir mehr oder weniger auf offener Straße, um den Ausblick auf Kilchurn Castle zu genießen. Heute leider nur noch eine Ruine, wurde die Burg um 1420 von Colin Campbell of Glenorchy erbaut. Nach verschiedenen Anbauten wurde sie 1760 von einem Blitzschlag getroffen, brannte fast vollständig aus und wurde danach aufgegeben. Die Ruine kann heute in den Sommermonaten noch besichtigt werden. Die waren bei unserem Besuch allerdings schon vorbei, aber allein der Ausblick auf Loch Awe und die umliegenden Berge hat den Stopp schon lohnenswert gemacht.

For our second destination, we stopped literally in the middle of the road to enjoy the view of Kilchurn Castle. Built around 1420 by Colin Campbell of Glenorchy, it has unfortantely only survived in ruins. After many additions it was hit in 1760 by lightning, burned down and was afterwards deserted. Today, one can visit the castle during the sommer months. Those were already past when we came to Kilchurn Castle, but the view of Loch Awe and the surrounding mountains made the stop nonetheless worthwile.

3. Stop: Inveraray Castle

Unser dritter Stopp war der heiß ersehnte Besuch von Inveraray Castle, auch heute noch im Besitz des Dukes of Argyll, einem Campbell. Als eines der ersten Exemplare schottischer Neogotik wurde die jetzige Burg 1743 anstelle einer älteren, mittelalterlichen Burg gebaut. Auch diese durfte bereits im Fernsehen auftreten, nämlich als ‚Duneagle Castle‘ in einer Weihnachtsepisode von Downton Abbey (wer diese Folge nun anschauen möchte, sollte definitiv Taschentücher parat haben – das Ende ist nichts für Romantiker!).

Our third stop was the much longed-for visit of Inveraray Castle, which is still the seat of the Duke of Argyll, a Campbell. As one of the earliest examples of Scottish Gothic Revival, it was built in 1743 to replace an earlier, medieval one. This castle starred on the telly as well, as ‚Duneagle Castle‘ in one of Downton Abbey’s Christmas episodes (whoever wants to watch that episode now should definitely grab some tissues – the ending is certainly not happy!).

Umgeben von 6,5 Hektar Garten und 240 Quadratkilometern Ländereien, ist dies der dauerhafte Wohnort des 13. Duke of Argyll und seiner Familie. Treuen Walter Scott-Fans wird auch dieser Name bekannt vorkommen, ist der Duke, oder besser gesagt einer seiner Vorfahren, doch Wohltäter und Freund von Scotts einziger Heldin, Jeanie Deans, in The Heart of Midlothian.

Surrounded by 16 acres of gardens and a 60,000-acre estate, Inveraray Castle is the permanent residence of the 13th Duke of Argyll and his family. Ardent Walter Scott fans might recognise this name as well. The Duke, or more accurate, one of his ancestors, is benefactor and friend of Scott’s only heroine, Jeanie Deans, in The Heart of Midlothian.

Erdgeschoss und 1. Stock können in den Sommermonaten besichtigt werden, der Rest der Burg besteht aus der Privatwohnung der adeligen Familie. Besichtigen kann man vor allem das Speisezimmer, in dem auch heute noch Staatsbanketts oder Familienfeiern ausgerichtet werden, und das MacArthur-Zimmer, in dem es angeblich spukt. Zur Ausstellung gehören diverse Gemälde und Bilder der Familie sowie mehr als 1.300 Waffen. Sympathisch!

The ground floor and first floor are open to visitors during the sommer months, but the rest of the castle is part of the family’s private apartment. One can visit the dining room, which is still used today for state banquets or family parties, and the MacArthur Room, which is said to be haunted. The exhibition encompasses many paintings and pictures of the family as well as more than 1,300 weapons. Charming!

Inveraray Castle liegt am Ufer des Loch Fyne, mit 65 km Länge dem längsten Atlantiklochs Schottlands. Loch Fìne, so die gälische Schreibweise, bedeutet ‚Loch des Weines‘. Allerdings gibt es keine Hinweise, dass hier Trauben angebaut wurden, und es wird vermutet, dass der Name nur die Bedeutung des Flusses und des Lochs widerspiegeln sollte.

Inveraray Castle is right next to Loch Fyne, whose length of 65 km makes it the longest seawater loch of Scotland. Loch Fìne, so the gaelic name, means ‚Loch of the Wine‘. However, there’s no proof that there were any grapes grown here and it is suggested that the name was only supposed to reflect the importance of the river and loch.

4. Stop: Rest and Be Thankful Pass

Für unseren vierten Stopp hielten wir an einem Aussichtspunkt namens Rest and Be Thankful. Von dort hat man eine grandiose Sicht über Glen Kinglas auf der einen und Glen Croe auf der anderen Seite. Außerdem kann man die alte Militärstraße erkennen, die hier nach der zweiten Jakobitischen Rebellion von 1745 zur Unterwerfung der Highlands von General Wade erbaut wurde. Ich bin mir unsicher, wie dankbar die heutigen Highlander sich an diesem Ort wirklich fühlen…

For our fourth stop we halted at the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint. From there you have a spectacular view of Glen Kinglas on the one side and Glen Croe on the other. You can also see the old military road built by General Wade after the second Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 in order to facilitate the Highland Clearances. I’m not sure how thankful today’s Highlanders really feel about this…

5. Stop: Loch Lomond

Am Nachmittag erreichten wir den schönsten Loch Schottlands: Loch Lomond. Da er auf der Highland-Verwerfungslinie liegt, wird er oftmals als Grenze zwischen den Highlands und den Lowlands betrachtet. Seit 2002 ist er Teil des Naturschutzparks Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. Meiner Meinung nach sollte jeder ein Mal durch diesen Park gefahren sein – hier erlebt man definitiv einige der Highlights der schottischen Highlands! Je nach Wasserstand hat der Loch etwa 60 Inseln, einige davon sind aber wirklich nur bei niedrigem Wasser zu sehen. Loch Lomond ist so schön, das ein ganzes Lied über ihn geschrieben wurde: The Bonnie Banks o‘ Loch Lomond.

In the afternoon we stopped at the most beautiful loch of Scotland: Loch Lomond. Since it crosses the Highland fault line, it is often seen as the border between the Highlands and the Lowlands. It became part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National park in 2002. I strongly recommend visiting this park as it contains many of the Highland’s highlights! Depending on water levels, the loch has up to 60 islands, but many of them are really only visible when the water level is pretty low. The beauty of Loch Lomond was commemorated in its very own song: ‚The Bonnie Banks o‘ Loch Lomond‘.

Bonus Stop: Stirling Castle

Nach einem wunderschönen und ereignisreichen Tag stoppte unser Busfahrer mit uns noch kurz bei Stirling Castle – und das ist genau der Grund, warum ich so gerne Timberbush Tours mache! Die Fahrer haben immer ein paar Geheimtipps und Bonusstopps parat. Wie Edinburgh Castle auch, steht Stirling Castle auf einem Berg aus Vulkangestein. Es war bis 1685 über 500 Jahre lang Hauptsitz der schottischen Könige.

After a beautiful and exciting day our driver stopped with us at Stirling Castle – and this is exactly the reason why I love Timerbush Tours so much! The drivers always share with you little secret spots and bonus stops. Just like Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle is built on volcanic rock. For over 500 years it was the main seat of Scottish monarchs up until 1685.
